This video shows the next 100x crypto unlock

It's been a joy living through the NFT Stone Age with all of you. We made cave paintings together and invented wheels and danced in the meadows. It was fun.

But now, O Dearly Beloved, it’s time to grow up. The next wave of crypto apps is coming.

This new video by thought leadooor/developer @nnnnicholas does a great job showing why we’re about to see a “100x unlock” thanks to some new upgrades.

It’s worth checking out the whole video, but here are the key points:

First, what’s the problem?

Crypto consumer apps have, for the most part, failed to gain any real traction.

And part of this is because of their utterly confusing and expensive user experience.

Don’t know what I mean? Try getting your parents to buy an NFT on Opensea from scratch.

Get ready for a lot of:

~ what are wallets?

~ how do I get a metamask?

~ what’s ETH?

~ how do I get ETH?

~ what’s WETH?

~ how do I get WETH?

~ what are gas fees?

To which you might say “mom just read the diagram I sent you it’s not that hard fr fr on god”

But it is that hard. This is not the way.

All that’s about to change, thanks to these new superpowers

Superpower #1: better native apps

Traditionally crypto apps have been at the mercy of their iOS/Android overlords.

But friend.tech is proving that there’s another way: Progressive Web Apps that can be added to your home screen and even send you notifications like a real app, without going through the App Store.

Plus, starting in early 2024 new regulations in Europe will force Apple to start letting users sideload apps using third-party app stores, which means freedom from any iOS crypto bans or insane 30% tx fees.

In other words, expect a lot more mobile crypto apps next year.

Superpower #2: Smart Contract Wallets

Smart contract wallets are a big deal and probably require their own post (this one has a good explanation).

For our purposes here, just know that this lets you use simpler logins to authenticate your account and sign transactions, including:

Not only is this 100x easier, but it also comes with account recovery options so you don’t have to worry about grandma losing the keys to her Sproto Gremlins collection.

Superpower #3: L2s and penny fees

More L2s are popping up every day, and now they’re competing for new apps by offering them grants to migrate to their chain.

We’re about to talk about “going gasless” next, but when it does come time to make a tx, L2s offer 10x cheaper fees than Ethereum.

See: friend.tech on Base.

Superpower #4: Gasless apps

Cheap txs are nice, but fees of any kind are still annoying. The goal should be to let users explore apps with zero-balance wallets.

Luckily that’s starting to happen.

Thanks to Smart Contract Wallets and cheap L2 fees, app devs can easily pay for user gas fees if they choose to.

A great example of this is Pirate Nation, which covers gas fees for its game on Arbitrum.

And thanks to “lazy minting”, like this new feature by Zora, creators can make NFTs that stay offchain until someone buys it (and pays the fees in the process).

Superpower #5: Custodial Experiences (I added this one)

More new apps are finding success by hiding crypto/wallets entirely.

Take Nitro Nation World Tour, a crypto game that recently hit 500k downloads in its first week on Android.

In NNWT, players unknowingly create NFTs on the backend whenever they buy a game item – it’s a very web2 game-like experience.

And for 99% of players, that’s all they’ll ever see. But the other 1% can still choose to take extra steps to transfer these NFTs to their own self-custody wallet down the road if they wish.

Win-win.

Bottom line

Crypto Consumer Apps are finally here. Take my hand, don’t be afraid.

NOTE: These drops are lightly curated. Our only requirement is that they have recognizable founders. As usual, DYOR. To learn more go here.

Machine Dreams by Dean Blacc

London-based artist Dean Blacc departs from the painted style of his previous Art Blocks and PROOF releases yet remains abstract in this upcoming Tonic.xyz drop, Machine Dreams, which showcases watercolor vibes.

A presale is currently open via email. More info on the Tonic website.

Wild Exhibition: MATERIAL

United Nations members turned into color gradients, looping pixel paintings and Tasmanian mining booms. What do these things have in common? They’re all featured in Wild.xyz’s first-ever group exhibition, MATERIAL.

Artists Figure31, Jeffrey Scudder and Sten Kirsten reimagine what kind of data can be used in generative art.

Sales details have not yet been fully revealed, but this could get interesting so I’ve…

Untitled Tonic Collection by Luke Shannon

Tonic.xyz features on today’s list once again, this time with a yet-to-be-named collection by artist Luke Shannon, which promises to “push the boundaries of digital art”.

While Shannon has released digital collections in the past (including on Art Blocks), he is perhaps best known for his recent physical work. A sign of things to come?

San FranTokyo: Visions

After selling out their free Genesis Pass in August, San FranTokyo Studios is back to confirm what I alluded to 3 months ago: A PFP is coming, Visions.

I can’t comment on the content around Visions given it doesn’t really exist yet, but the team has already confirmed that Genesis Pass holders will get a free claim plus a discounted mint (both with a lock-up period).

Details are scant, but I like how the team is thinking about experiences (e.g. Weebox), so I’ve…
