Paris Hilton wants you to buy this tomorrow

Context

MareBears is the latest collection from metaverse and digital fashion brand RSTLSS.

Here’s what we know:

  • Public mint is on 9/28

  • Total supply is 15,000

  • 3,063 will be claimed for free by THE CUBE holders

  • Public price still TBD

Our take

“Who was obsessed with Tamagotchis in the late 90s? If you were (or are!) then get ready for this.”

That was the opening tweet in Paris Hilton’s thread yesterday promoting MareBears.

Obsessed with Tamagotchi – I mean, I guess I was to some degree? But it’s not like I’ve been walking around with a Tamagotchi-sized hole in my heart for the last 20 years that needs to be filled.

Of course, I could be in the minority, and maybe there are millions out there constantly on the search for cute digital things that depend on them to maintain their existence.

But what exactly are they buying here? Let’s take a look.

MareBears 101

At their core, MareBears is a collection of NFTs that you can “pet, feed and care for”, as well as equip with other onchain items.

So it’s a digital toy that will live on your phone among other places.

But it’s also a template for future fashion and trait collabs. Each MareBear comes as an ERC-6551 (backpack) token with 13 trait slots that can be filled with other tokens.

These trait tokens can be traded onchain and actually change the MareBear’s 3D visual aesthetic when equipped.

It’s a similar idea to Fewoworld, covered here, which happens to have its public mint on the same day (awkward).

Well connected founder

Charli Cohen, who founded RSTLSS back in 2021, has been creating digital fashion and metaverse experiences for brands like Pokemon, Snapchat, and Reebok for years.

And she’s clearly been networking well.

Early examples of Mare Bear traits include bedazzled DJ headphones by Paris Hilton and Rabbids outfits by Ubisoft.

RSTLSS also previously collabed with Diablo, Epic Games, and Gremplin.

And holders include some well-known NFT whales like Pranksy and Gmoney, who own a combined 700 cubes.

So all this means we could see some surprisingly big partnerships in the future.

There’s a lot of other stuff too. Like a staking mechanic that gets you T+ (their own currency). And education courses for artists. And integrations in some (rather empty) metaverses.

Those mostly sound like side-quests to me. I think if you’re buying this it’s really for that gamified Tamagotchi experience and the extensive trait swapping.

Bottom line

MareBears is not a small collection by any means. The 15k supply would’ve seemed high in 2021, and it appears even more aggressive in 2023.

And given the original 0.033 ETH sale for the original cubes, I’m guessing MareBears will cost at least 0.05 ETH at public mint (roughly $80), which would be on the higher end considering the supply plus the fact that you’ll likely need to pay for some future trait collabs as well.

The actual price should be announced later today and could change my take on it.

But overall this is a fun onchain mint for those that still believe in the metaverse and digital fashion verticals.

There are enough RSTLSS drops already out there for you to judge if you vibe with their aesthetic and vision.

And if you do, it looks like MareBears will be their flagship project going forward.

Top 25

NOTE: These drops are lightly curated. Our only requirement is that they have recognizable founders. As usual, DYOR. To learn more go here.

Premium Pack: Grails That Got Away #3

Following a successful Stress Test last week that notably increased engagement for the platform, Courtyard.io is once again asking you to Collect Them All with their biggest drop yet, Grails That Got Away #3.

These packs are six times pricier than the first two, but for good reason – the cards are way rarer on average.

Before the drop, I’d suggest checking the current secondary price of each physical card to ensure it makes sense for you to spin the RNG wheel

The Seeker by Karborn

A myriad of aesthetic retro pixel animations converge in The Seeker, a new collection by London artist John Karborn in collaboration with omnipresent dev studio Transient Labs.

These editions use Transient’s Collector Choice contract, first introduced last May with Doppelgänger (which I wrote about here), allowing for multiple artworks to coexist under one token.

The sale is timed, with a unique mechanic: every mint deducts 20 minutes from the timer, but the starting duration is undisclosed.

Matt Kane RarePass Airdrop

SuperRare’s RarePass announced Matt Kane as the next artist to airdrop new work exclusively to pass holders.

It’s as good a time as any to receive work from the Gazers creator, as he just showed his market resonance last week with auction sales totaling more than 169 ETH.

You’ll need to hold a RarePass to get these new pieces though, which will cost you 10 ETH at the time of this writing (originally minted for 17 ETH). Bear in mind that there’s only one more free airdrop for pass holders after this one, by none other than XCOPY.

Nounish Punk

Despite the current bad vibes around Nouns (covered here), engaged community members are still building projects around the IP, like indie games studio Genius Slackers and their upcoming game, Nounish Punk.

The team already has a couple of small titles under its belt, including a 2020 release that was featured on IGN, but gameplay footage is still scant.

And there are even fewer details about the NFT mint. So I’ll hold judgment until more is unveiled.
