Context

Reddit is officially releasing its Gen 5 avatar series this week.

All the avatars come with a spooky Halloween theme.

More info is expected later today.

Our take

Reddit Avatars have had their ups and downs:

Gen 1 → sold out

Gen 2 → sold out instantly

Gen 3 → only 40% of avatars sold out

Gen 4 → only 7% of avatars sold out

Yikes, what happened?

The simple answer: oversupply.

Reddit went from 45,000 NFTs in Gen 1, to an insane 581,000 NFTs in Gen 4.

All while the overall NFT market collapsed around them.

Of course, top avatars still do well. Even in Gen 4, popular sets like Cool Cats and Rojom minted out quickly.

But collectors have lost some enthusiasm. Later Gens made it easier for newbies to buy an avatar without needing bots, but it removed much of the excitement from hardcore collectors.

Scarcity is back

We still don’t know much about Gen 5, but we do know one thing:

Reddit is cutting price and supply…dramatically.

An early leak shows that artists have a max supply of 500 NFTs this time around.

This is down from a max supply of 10,000 NFTs per avatar in Gen 4 – which honestly looks crazy looking back.

Max price was also reduced to $50, down from a max of $200 in Gen 4.

Bottom line

Reddit avatars are not all created equal. Some are hugely popular, while others are destined to collect cobwebs in the Reddit store for generations to come.

This time, however, we’ll likely see more individual artists mint out due to the massive price/supply cuts.

A few confirmed artists that should do well include:

Bunnygirl Capital mints today

I previously wrote about Bunnygirl Capital and the Search For the Next Milady (which sounds like banger Harry Potter fanfiction).

On Friday they finally revealed price/supply: 10,000 NFTs at 0.088 ETH.

The mint begins at 12 PM ET today, starting with their WL made up of bammers holders.

First reaction: price seems high but this market is warming up again I guess.

Second reaction: 10k supply means yet another large collection with (probably) weak art and diluted traits. We only have a single preview, but we’ve learned that it’s hard to craft impressive PFPs when you’re forced to accommodate many thousands of individual designs. I thought we were all on the same page by now, yet here we are.

NOTE: These drops are lightly curated. Our only requirement is that they have recognizable founders. As usual, DYOR. To learn more go here.

Broken Algorithms by ChainVirus

For those willing to take a chance on an emerging glitch artist, Broken Algorithms launches on Thursday.

This 53-supply generative collection (made fully in code) is the work of pseudonymous account ChainVirus.

It follows up on the artist’s style seen in their Foundation and Bitcoin Ordinals drops, and teases bigger plans in the future 🤔

Ultrabionika [UBK] by Fernando Jerez

The machines take over in this month’s BrainDrops release by Spanish artist Fernando Jerez.

It's a 500-supply AI evolution of one of Jerez’s previous well-received Art Blocks collections, UMK, where he imagined machines evolving into biological organisms. For more on the technical process, check here.

One for those who reminisce about the battle scenes in the third Matrix movie (me).

Reflections Tender Exhibition

The Transient Labs art collaborations show no sign of stopping as the development studio now is partnering with art platform Tender for the release of Reflections, an AI art exhibition and auction of 100+ works.

Nine artists have made several series of portraits for the drop. You’ll probably recognize some if you’ve been following the NFT AI art space recently: Ira Greenberg, pale kirill, Danielle King, Jenni Pasanen, Str4ngeThing, Francien Krieg, ClownVamp, Chelsea Jones and Lily Illo.

Each piece is both a token and a physical painting created by an artmatr robot. A nice touch.

Gruffters by Gruff

Pseudonymous digital artist Gruff, who gained popularity earlier this year thanks to his nostalgic illustrations, takes inspiration from XCOPY for Gruffters.

This 676-supply CC0 collection reimagines Grifters (one of XCOPY’s most popular collections) in a more human form, taking the classic side-profile PFP format.

It pays homage to several popular artists through its 1/1s, making this one for the artheads.

Correction

Last Thursday, I mentioned an open edition mint when writing about Mr. Richi's Venus de Crypto, but this is incorrect as it's actually a limited edition of 120 tokens (minters still decide the supply size of each specific artwork).
