Are we getting rugged?

Supposedly this was the slowest weekend for NFTs in years.

Don't worry, it'll get worse. But then it'll get better, before getting much worse, and so on.

That's the intro - send.

In today’s edition:

  • Are we getting rugged?

  • New Mint and Watch Lists

  • Four new drops (including 1 on the Watch List)

Links for the Mint/Watch list drops are HERE.

Did you know?

We have a premium pass that gives you access to a directory of every drop we cover, complete with detailed information on how to get on every whitelist (including those underrated ones that aren’t already full).

And for those curatooors out there, you can get free NFTs just by finding drops that end up on the Mint or Watch list.

Lastly, hang with me and the MoS team in a private discord with weekly voice chats. The vibes are great.

Context

Cryptodickbutts dropped a new mint over the weekend – with a twist.

The collection is called Cryptodickbutts Series 4, a mint with 6,900 NFTs priced at 0.065 eth.

What’s the twist?

30 days after mint out, the individual or group with the most Cryptodickbutts will be gifted ownership of:

  • CDB Twitter Account

  • Discord Server

  • All Collections

  • Multisig Treasury Spot

  • Other CDB Related Assets

In other words, they’ll get full control of the Cryptodickbutt empire.

So far only 3,465 of the 6,900 NFTs have been minted.

Our Take

I imagine it must be tough being the guy who made Cryptodickbutts.

Being crushed under all that creative genius.

Not able to step outside for a quick bagel and lox without having to sign a dozen autographs.

Spending 4 hrs a day 7 days a week in Discord explaining to people that this is a vibes only project with no roadmap.

It’s easy to see why you’d want out.

And in this case, you have to give them points for going out with a bang. Or more specifically, with a browser game that ends with you standing in a room with a gun looking over a cradle with the baby version of Sam Bankman Fried.

No really, they made a mini-game for their mint and you might as well check it out.

Now sure, you could label this a soft rug. Others might call it an elegant exit play. A transparent takeover. A shrewd transaction masked as performance art.

I personally think there’s nothing wrong with the setup given that everything is laid out clearly from the start. However, I do think there’s a risk of a low-effort reveal here, or even no reveal at all – a man with nothing to lose is a dangerous man indeed.

It’s also tough to understand what you’re actually buying here.

I mean, the IP is CC0. The collection wasn’t made by the person who actually designed the OG dickbutt meme. It has no revenue outside of royalties which I’m guessing are near zero at this point. There are no CDB plushies at your local Target.

And yet, some speculate you can get control with as little as 50 ETH (I spent 0 mins fact-checking this), which I suppose isn’t bad given that we’re talking about maybe a top 10 crypto meme here.

Plus, as far as memes go, CDB has many friends in high places. There are a ton of whales that own one, especially from the Punks community (6529 comes to mind).

Could there be a Cinderella story here? Is this a future Netflix documentary in the making?

Personally, I see fourteen million six hundred and five potential timelines here, and only one where this ends up being positive for the brand (for those wondering - it involves Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson taking full creative control).

Hopefully, this isn’t the end of the CDB Universe, it has been a fan favorite here at Mint or Skip HQ. But we’re not going to be the ones making a bid here - sorry.

Vaya con dios my little friend.

NOTE: These drops are lightly curated. Our only requirement is that they have recognizable founders. As usual, DYOR. To learn more go here.

What The Font by DeeKay

Korean animator DeeKay, a favorite among quite a few in the NFT crowd, will release his next playful loop, What The Font, as a 50-supply edition tomorrow.

Like Tony Babel’s work, it’s an example of looped animations from NFT creators reaching far outside our little social media bubble – the original teaser for this piece got 3.5 million views on Twitter since May.

You’ll need a bit of luck to get in on the mint, though. All of the mint spots for this one are being raffled out in just a couple of hours, with most of the supply going to DeeKay’s existing holders.

Anamorphic Generations by Maxim Zhestkov

Russian digital artist Maxim Zhestkov (known for his focus on sculpture, architecture and occasional use of VR) will release Anamorphic Generations tomorrow, his first open edition.

This mint takes place on Zien, a Web3 art platform founded in 2020 with an emphasis on “Expanded NFTs” – digital tokens with physical counterparts that are redeemable onchain.

The 2-in-1 physical + digital combo is a trend we’ve seen grow this year with drops from Avant Arte. But Zien takes a more technical approach by handling it all on-chain.

Anamorphic Generations follows suit, allowing minters of the open edition to claim a print for $200. The drop also includes ten 1/1s available for sale upon request, likely requiring a pretty penny.

Bug by Charlie Engman

It’s no secret that Fellowship’s Post Photography series is one of our favorites here at Mint or Skip HQ. Of these releases, one of the more compelling ones so far has been the Charlie Engman collection from the first show back in April.

Since then Engman has been relatively quiet on the NFT front. That is, until now.

Bug is his first NFT collection since then. It’s a 50-supply set of 1/1s selling on the Assembly platform. Featuring his bizarre, yet captivating, imagery that we’re now familiar with, this time he emphasizes…fauna, to put it one way.

If you enjoyed the first collection as much as we did, this one might be for you.

923 Empty Rooms by Casey Reas

I’ve written about Casey Reas in passing before. He’s a highly influential, museum-exhibited digital artist with a large body of NFT work, who also co-created the award-winning design programming language Processing.

And his next collection has just been announced as part of an Art Blocks x Bright Moments collaboration: 923 Empty Rooms.

The release is a conceptual follow-up on the artist’s recent LACMA project, METAVASARELY, repurposing its shapes and colors to fit into forms that represent each of Bright Moments’s six galleries. These six different forms will be sold separately starting on August 14th, with 154 pieces selling daily.

We’re still waiting on pricing, but this drop’s got a lot going for it, so we’ve…
