friend.tech but with a twist (new app)

Context

a new player has entered

Zapper_fi, a popular crypto portfolio tracker, launched a SocialFi app on Base yesterday called Chainchat, bringing new ideas to the friend.tech formula.

At one point yesterday it became the top trending app on Base.

Our take

friend.tech showed us that we could have fun (and make money) buying our friends.

But does it have to stop there?

We all have a group chat we’re in - right?

What if we could token-gate that chat? And what if we could make money together as others paid to get in?

That’s Chainchat.

One person owning a room isn’t cool. You know what’s cool? A billion people co-owning a room.

Yoink and Twist

Chainchat does an old school Yoink and Twist on friend.tech.

First, the Yoink:

Chainchat starts with a familiar recipe. You have different rooms that you can buy into, the price of those rooms moves on a bonding curve based on demand, and each buy/sell comes with fees that go to the room owner.

Then the twist (there are a few):

  1. These are group chats where anyone can talk with anyone else (unlike FT where you can only chat with the room owners)

  2. Everyone who owns a room key shares the fees

  3. You can view everyone’s onchain reputation (and net worth) through Zapper’s polished interface

The most obvious advantage to group chats, outside of fee-sharing, is that you can have themes. For example, one of the most popular groups so far is “Defi_Airdrops” which presumably is where you share airdrop alpha.

This makes it closer to traditional subscriptions because you have a better idea of what they’re offering.

But the downside is probably weaker virality.

friend.tech did well partly because creators went hard promoting their own coins to stroke their ego (funny what happens when there’s a price next to your name), and also because personal fees were much greater than what we might see individuals make from a larger group chat.

Bottom line

Personally, I enjoy the fact that I don’t see everyone’s messages on FT unless the creator replies to them (it helps reduce trolling).

And I’m not sure if the vibes in any of my current group chats would improve with a bonding curve.

But I’m open to any and all ideas as we enter the second inning of SocialFi season.

NOTE: These drops are lightly curated. Our only requirement is that they have recognizable founders. As usual, DYOR. To learn more go here.

Polygon 2.0 zkEVM Saga Week 2

Airdrop hunters, en garde!

Polygon is launching a campaign as part of their zkEVM upgrade rollout (currently in Beta), where users are encouraged to interact with various onchain protocols in order to earn points and mint free NFTs.

Week 2 of the campaign starts today, following a 4-month pause since week 1, during which various upgrades were pushed to the hatchling network.

And The Absurd Was Born by Luis Ponce

Luis Ponce, known for his eccentric, colorful, and certainly not epileptic-friendly animation work, takes his talents to the print format with the help of Avant Arte in the 25-supply And The Absurd Was Born.

This physical + digital release is part of the platform’s ongoing collaboration with curator Cozomo de Medici, and it includes an animated NFT as well as a glow-in-the-dark print (trippy).

Ponce is a popular artist among institutions (Sotheby’s and Christie’s) and collectors (just sold a 1/1 for nearly 8 ETH earlier this month). Plus, this print passes the wall-hang test for me, so I’ve…

Avant Arte Drop by Alpha Centauri Kid

Alpha Centauri Kid is another big name whose work will grace the Avant Arte printers next month. Here’s a teaser for the 69 x 69 cm print (nice) and most likely an NFT.

This one’s also part of the ongoing Avant x Cozomo de Medici program, but mint details are nowhere to be found.

Regardless, it’s a drop that’s already making waves on social media, coming from one of the most influential artists in the space who just last May (deep NFT bear market territory) sold over 700 ETH with his last collection.

OSF's FIGHT NIGHT

Mints tied to physical events are a growing trend, and this drop is another example of that.

Artist and founder OSF, creator of the popular PFP Rektguy, will commemorate his November 24th Crypto Fight Night boxing match with a gamified mint for 9 editions (69-supply each), each predicting a different fight outcome. Those who hold the correct outcome will be rewarded with an extra airdrop edition after the fight.

The first one (forecasting an R1 OSF KO) already minted, but there are eight more on the way. Are we a sports betting newsletter now?
