It’s finally Runes day

Runes, a memecoin standard on Bitcoin, is launching tonight.

We’ve covered this quite a bit, so here are a couple posts if you want to follow the lore from the beginning.

Today I’ll go over some last-minute points heading into the launch.

Let’s begin.

What are Runes?

Fungible tokens on Bitcoin, similar to ERC-20 on Ethereum. For a far more technical understanding, I recommend this great thread

How do you get a Rune?

There are three main ways:

  1. Pre-runes: These are existing Ordinals collections promising to airdrop Runes after the standard launches. Examples are RSIC and Runestone.

  2. Primary mints: You’ll need to run a full Bitcoin node to mint directly (great explainer here). Otherwise, you can look for third-party platforms like Runes Terminal, but DYOR as we have not tried any of these.

  3. Secondary: Magic Eden has a Runes portal coming for secondary trades.

Runes come in different shapes and sizes

Some will be Open Etchings – a “fair” distribution where anyone can mint them.

Others might start off closed, meaning whitelisted addresses and “pre-mines”.

Some might be free, others might be sold at a price.

Supply and distribution timelines will vary wildly.

Read the fine print anon.

Uncommon Goods

Casey Rodarmor (the creator of Ordinals and Runes) originally said that he’d hardcode the first 10 runes to ensure they weren’t filled with cheesy names.

But two days ago he confirmed that he’s only hardcoding the first one, which he’s calling Uncommon Goods

This is a large-supply Rune with a multi-year schedule, so it probably won’t be a favorite among speculators, but it’s the only confirmed one from Rodarmor himself.

More on Uncommon Goods here

Names are important

When you think about it, a memecoin is just a name and (usually) a jpeg.

And on Bitcoin, there’s an extra degree of scarcity around names since they’re first-come-first-serve. Which means every Rune name you’ve seen so far is likely a placeholder since no one wants to reveal their true name and risk someone else front-running them.

Any name is fair game as long as it’s 13 to 28 characters and only uses the letters A through Z. Shorter names will unlock over time but won't be immediately available.

So no DOGE at launch, but someone could do DOGE•ON•BITCOIN.

How might this affect Ordinals?

Bitcoin fees will likely explode like when BRC-20 hit its peak last year.

So this could be your last chance to get that Ordinal you've been eyeing without getting squeezed by miners (at least until the Runes hype cools off).

NOTE: These drops are lightly curated. Our only requirement is that they have recognizable founders. As usual, DYOR. To learn more go here.

Post Photographic Perspectives III

One of the most successful AI art series is back with its final installment (for now) with Fellowship’s Post Photographic Perspectives III: Taming the Machine.

It’s a return to basics, featuring only still photographs and forgoing the video work featured in last July’s PPP II.

This change highlights the progress of AI art since the first PPP (also only stills), showcasing how much better “the machine” is at expressing creative ideas.

Like the previous collections, this one has a little something for everyone, as 10 artists work with vastly different ideas – from the bright and surreal to the creepy and nightmarish.

glitch by Misha de Ridder

Dutch artist Misha de Ridder animates conceptual art for the next FingerprintsDAO release, glitch.

Graffiti flickers on abstract canvases, sending subliminal messages Fight Club style. Adding to the impermanence, most images are set to fade when certain conditions are met.

In total, there will be 50 glitched-out 1/1 GIFs sold via an auction, and a 510-supply edition sold at a fixed price.

While I’m not sure the average collector will feel good about their art piece potentially turning blank, I’ve…
