Elon Musk’s NFT shopping list

My favorite onchain NFTs

Little known fact:

Every Mint or Skip email is originally shouted into a Sanyo Cassette Recorder M2533, in one take, then transcribed into Latin first (for our archives) before being translated into English by an assembly line of interns.

In today’s edition:

Elon Musk’s NFT shopping list

Elon Musk recently went on the Joe Rogan podcast and had this to say about NFTs:

“The funny thing is the NFT is not even on the blockchain—it’s just a URL to the JPEG…You should at least encode the JPEG in the blockchain. It’s like, if the company housing the image goes out of business, you don’t have the image anymore.”

And in most cases…he’s not wrong.

But this doesn’t mean Elon is anti-NFTs, he just hasn’t been introduced to the right ones yet.

So I did him a favor – gratis: I crafted a custom shopping list tailored to his onchain preferences and personality.

Without further ado, here’s a list of NFTs Elon can take to Mars.

The Big Brain pick: Terraforms

We’ve written about the over-the-top, verbose and borderline indecipherable theory underpinning Terraforms by Mathcastles.

It’s an art project. It’s an interoperable computer program. It’s a durable metaverse.

Who knows, but it’ll be up Elon’s alley.

Runner up: OnChainMonkeys

The Historical pick: Autoglyphs

The first fully onchain generative art project, and perhaps Larva Labs’s Magnum Opus. Any Art Blocks collector would consider this 2017 relic a grail amongst grails.

And if Elon values permanence so much, he should want one of the first NFTs that pushed us in that direction early on.

Runner up: Cryptopunks/Mooncats (both added onchain later)

The Art Collectooor pick: Algo Bro by XCOPY

XCOPY is a safe pick for crypto art Mount Rushmore. A pioneer who first began creating NFTs in 2018 and is now the de facto king of modern glitch art.

And just last week XCOPY released Algo Bro, his first fully onchain runtime NFT, which also shows off his trademark glitch visuals. Doesn’t get much better than that.

Runner up: Noumenon by 0xDeafbeef (or basically any other 0xDeafbeef project)

The Really Fucking Expensive pick: Inscription #0

Most inscriptions (Bitcoin NFTs) are fully onchain. Some might even say they’re more onchain than Ethereum NFTs.

And this is the granddaddy of all inscriptions. The very first one – minted by Casey Rodarmor, and introduced almost nonchalantly on Twitter late last year.

Good luck trying to get him to sell it. But if anyone has deep enough pockets, maybe it’s Elon?

Runner up: Cryptopunk #3443 valued at ~3,500 ETH.

The Meme pick: Cryptodickbutts

Let’s see.

  1. Elon loves crypto memes (so much that he was sued for $250 billion once)

  2. He’s already shared CDB as a meme before

  3. CDB was brought onchain in 2022

Need I say more?

Runner up: Larva Lads

The “How Did You Know I Was a Nerd” pick: Loot

People went nuts when Dom Hoffman dropped Loot on a warm summer day in 2021.

But you can’t not look like an absolute geek showing off your text list of medieval fantasy items while mumbling something about bottom-up decentralized worldbuilding.

Young Elon would’ve loved it.

Runner up: Anonymice

Untitled Audio Galleries Drop by DirtyRobot

Gather round, anime art fans, we’ll be eating well soon enough.

Daniel Isles, a.k.a. DirtyRobot, a.k.a. the creator of RENGA, will have a limited drop to conclude the inaugural series of Audio Galleries's Artist Editions, which started in January of this year.

Details are scant, but we know it’ll mint on Opensea. And assuming these recent sneak peeks are tied to the drop, the collection will feature the artist’s usual style and color palette.

Starbucks Holiday Cup Collection

A fresh start to a new month can only mean one thing: It’s time for a new Starbucks NFT stamp. At least this one’s free, though.

According to a discord announcement yesterday, the Starbucks Odyssey Holiday Cup Collection will drop as a limited-supply free claim that provides 500 in-app points per stamp.

However, the mint is exclusive to program members (still in US-only beta) who have completed at least 3 in-app “Journeys” (missions) by November 14th, which may require you to purchase some coffee at your local mermaid-themed bean water supplier.

No such thing as a free cup of coffee.

PROOF Curated: Fall / Winter Exhibition Series

PROOF looks to keep the momentum from their Notes from a Neutron Star sellout (which included some impressive 1/1 sales) by announcing their upcoming Fall/Winter Exhibition Series.

It’ll feature an exhibition for each of the five artists on the roster, some (if not all) of whom art appreciatooors will recognize:

I like this lineup and, although mint details haven’t been revealed, I’ve tentatively…

OOSAGI

Another meal for the weeabos and weeblets coming right up.

OOSAGI is a 995-supply anime-styled PFP collection of rabbit characters (usagi = rabbit in Japanese). The illustrator, Esther Liang (an official Louis Vuitton artisan), came up with the idea in late 2022.

Although Liang recently posted physical bag designs featuring the work, I’d be mostly in this one for the art, which I greatly enjoy as somewhat of a cross between the 2022 Allstarz PFP and this extremely specific rabbit Digimon from the 2000 Digimon movie. Kind of based.
