Big NFT Gaming Update

We mostly talk about indie cryptonative game devs in this newsletter.

But what about all the big AAA game companies – the ones launching the GTAs, Fortnites, and Diablos of the world?

Are they coming around to NFTs yet?

Here’s a snapshot update on those publishers, along with some personal ratings based on how much wagmi energy they’re each showing as we head into 2024.

Ratings

⭐ NFTs are unholy scams

⭐⭐ Doesn’t like NFTs but likes money

⭐⭐⭐ Kinda into it 👉👈

⭐⭐⭐⭐ Turbo WAGMI

Let’sa go!

Blizzard

Blizzard’s last official blockchain comment came in 2022, when their President tweeted simply:

Not looking great here.

Nintendo

Hired an NFT expert earlier this year. But knowing Nintendo I wouldn’t expect anything until 2050 at the earliest.

Steam

Totally fading blockchain gaming so far. NFTs are still banned on their store, although some manage to sneak in anyway.

EA ⭐⭐

EA partnered with Nike on a very limited NFT experiment in June. But otherwise, they seem content printing money with web2 loot boxes.

Epic Games ⭐⭐

2021: CEO Tim Sweeney calls NFTs an “intractable mix of scams”.

2023: Adds dozens of NFT games to the Epic Games Store.

Still no Fortnite though.

Take-two ⭐⭐

Rumors were floating around that Grand Theft Auto 6 might include crypto.

Turns out there was 0 evidence supporting that.

In reality, Take-Two’s CEO has had mixed things to say about NFTs in the past.

Konami ⭐⭐⭐

Hyped me up last month when they revealed an upcoming NFT game called Project Zircon.

But their more recent update makes it seem really low on their priority list, with development not even planned until 2025 or later. My interest is dropping fast.

Roblox ⭐⭐⭐

Made waves yesterday when they said that NFTs were a “dream” for them.

I think this happens a little further out, but with 200M monthly users this will eventually be a massive participant.

CCP Games ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The makers of the 20-year-old hardcore economics space game EVE Online, which is more of a metaverse than most things in web3 today.

Recently raised $40m to make a blockchain game in the EVE universe. Things seem to be escalating quickly.

Com2US ⭐⭐⭐⭐

South Korean publisher. Maybe the biggest believer on this list.

Launched Summoner’s War: Chronicles with web3 components, and was getting 1 million daily players after launch.

Actual quote:

“Right now, our focus is on: we’re going to bring every single original IP to the blockchain.”

Nexon ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Another big believer.

Pivoting the ever-popular Maplestory into NFTs and has plans to go fully interoperable with other blockchain assets.

Square Enix ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Went hard earlier in the year, making lovey-dovey comments about web3 and even replacing their CEO with a blockchain expert.

Now they’re finally launching their NFT game Symbiogenesis – although in a very confusing and low-key fashion.

And they keep experimenting here and there, like these Final Fantasy NFT trading cards.

Ubisoft ⭐⭐⭐⭐

One of the first to launch an in-game NFT, and get battered by anti-NFT gamers. But now they’re back with a new crypto experience on Immutable.

Props for the conviction.

Zynga ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Launched an actual NFT platform earlier this year called Sugartown, with its very own 10k collection.

It still feels limited in scope relative to the rest of their portfolio, but they’re definitely in the trenches now.

NOTE: These drops are lightly curated. Our only requirement is that they have recognizable founders. As usual, DYOR. To learn more go here.

Ambiguity by SeattleSales

Pseudonymous artist Seattle Sales, founder of art platform Seize the Culture, follows up on his recent Swirls sellout with the 500-supply Ambiguity.

The collection features pieces of various styles created with Midjourney and Photoshop (like his last), as well as 20 unique pieces by guest AI artists.

One for emerging AI art explorers.

Courtyard.io Week of Thanks

After selling out all ten of their previous drops, Courtyard.io is giving back with Web3 Week of Thanks, minting 400 tokenized Pokémon cards for free.

These will be split across four drops next week. They’re all FCFS from what I can see, so better get those clicking fingers ready.

Who doesn’t like free Pokémon cards?

Untitled SuperRare Drop by Pindar Van Arman

Pindar Van Arman, one of the top AI artists in NFTs, unearths a 2018 project in this upcoming SuperRare collection.

Consisting of 128 robot-drawn face portraits with muted colors and rough outlines, it serves as a time capsule for the tech. Aesthetically, it’s similar to his Bright Moments release from May, AI Imagined Faces.

It hasn’t been that long since Van Arman was lighting up the market with byteGANs, and I could see collectors taking an interest in his earlier work, so I’ve…

Unigraphs by Mulan.art

The Ordinals scene is still ripe for artists, but relatively few have taken the cross-chain leap.

One who has is Nicole Liu (a.k.a. Mulan.art), and now she’s dropping Unigraphs after selling out her 100-supply Abstraordinals in May, which is currently sitting at 10x its original mint price.

This upcoming 555-supply generative collection pairs Bitcoin sats’ ID numbers and text names with different shapes and colors, ensuring that each abstract piece is unique. You can already check the pieces here.

One for orange coin believers.
