The best NFT utility I’ve seen so far

Context

When we first covered Luke Shannon’s upcoming drop with Tonic.xyz, we knew almost nothing about what they were cooking up.

Well, now we know.

It’s chairs.

To be specific: tokenized generative blueprints for physical chairs.

Seating Arrangements launches on November 17th.

We still don’t know price/supply, but you can pre-register on their website to be the first to receive the pre-auction sales catalog.

Our take

Your favorite NFT: sits in an Opensea collection that no one ever looks at, gives you access to a Discord server that hasn’t had a reply since the 2021 bull run and its only real utility is repelling the opposite sex whenever you use it as a PFP on social media.

My favorite NFT: adds to the Feng Shui of my living room, lets me rest my feet after a long day, doesn’t need a blockchain to prove it exists (just sit on it), is one of the oldest types of furniture known to man.

We are not the same.

Until now, most NFTs have stayed in the digital realm. All your favorite jpegs are trapped inside of a Superman-style glass prison, unable to pierce our other reality.

That’s changing fast. More creators are experimenting with NFTs that produce unique physical objects.

Specifically, we’re seeing a rise in physical goods sold with many of the familiar features that we’ve come to expect from generative art, like:

  • Provably random mints

  • Endlessly customizable smart contracts

  • Verifiably unique assets

  • Decentralized ownership

Recent examples include /// by SnowFro and 9DCC’s Chromie Squiggle collab

The Collect Everything Market

Listen to Your Favorite Author…the objects in your living room and closet will, slowly but surely, begin to shift from fungible to non-fungible status.

They’ll have embedded chips that connect them to digital “twins” that can be leveled up to unlock new products/experiences.

And, like with Luke Shannon’s chairs, objects themselves will be born directly from an NFT’s metadata.

This genre is gaining momentum and it’s obvious why. NFT collectors often collect more than just NFTs: wine bottles, Pokemon cards, traditional art, sneakers, watches.

Why stop with JPEGs?

We’re seeing more and more examples of limited-edition, unique, micro-branded objects tied to tokens, including:

Keeping an eye out for more details on this one.

NOTE: These drops are lightly curated. Our only requirement is that they have recognizable founders. As usual, DYOR. To learn more go here.

Anemoia by Ozbren

Ah, anon, I remember the carefree days of Tekken 3 on the PlayStation…

Before the “gm” chains on social media, the derivatives of derivatives of monkey jpegs and the 8-hour candlestick chart staring sessions. It was just me, my PS1 controller and my innocent yet undying hatred of Eddy Gordo.

If you share my nostalgia for the 90’s and early 2000s, then perhaps this low polygon drop from digital artist Ozbren will tickle your fancy. It’s a style he’s explored before, though this one has a much milder theme compared to his recent hallucination-inducing animations.

Untitled Drop by FVCKRENDER × RedruM

A yet-to-be-named collab featuring FVCKRENDER’s sleek digital creations and RedruM’s vermillion AI art.

Although no details (not even a sneak peek) have been revealed, this is definitely one to keep your eye on if you’re a fan of their works.

Untitled gm.studio Drop by Dominikus Baur

Following up on the successful sellout of their Adam genlight drop two months ago, gm.studio has chosen German developer and designer Dominikus Baur for their next Select release.

While no mint details or sneak peeks are available yet, you can take a look at the artist’s years of work on Ethereum and Tezos to get a sense of how this upcoming generative collection might look.

Since this a Select gm.studio collection, gmDAO token holders can expect first dibs.

Perils of Sese by Seneca

Do you hear that, anon? It’s the sound of a drop as big as the T-rex that once escaped the paddock 30 years ago.

All Seeing Seneca, the original lead designer of Bored Ape Yacht Club, will soon release a brand new collection titled Perils of Sēsē.

The Twitter video and website creepily combine innocent cartoon imagery with deep distorted voices, foreboding music and trippy backgrounds, akin to watching Alice in Wonderland while on the wrong batch of shrooms.

This artist’s scattered, lower supply art drops since BAYC (in platforms like PROOF and SuperRare) have always been well received, and this might be her first larger supply solo collection ever, so I’ve…
