These won't stay hidden for long

It’s a summer Friday. If you were visiting a new city this would be a perfect time to have a cold drink, step off the beaten path, and walk down some inviting side streets that you’ve never visited before. ¡Qué noche tan bella!

Web3 works the same way – you have the main tourist attractions, the stuff that gets the headlines, but there are endless side-quests and hidden corners that remain largely unexplored.

Even more so now, when the market is at the sleepiest it's been in a long time.

But where to go? There’s no Web3 Frommers, no Rick Steves, no plugged-in tour guide to give you those local tips that you won’t find on yelp.

That is, until now.

Going forward we’ll have a regular series where we highlight some of our favorite micro-events, pop-up shops, weird experiments, and more.

Today we’ll start with a few small accounts that I think are flying under the radar. Worth following to get a heads-up on their next creative effort.

Let’s begin.

int art

int art call themselves “a platform for building interactive arts and design”.

Back in 2021, they launched thedudes, a fully onchain collection that they claimed was the first interactive PFP.

They did the same again using pixel art in the pixels inc.

Basically, think of these as fun ways to move your PFP around, vibrate them, etc., built with expertly crafted smart contracts that push further each time with extra twists. Give it a go on OpenSea.

Now they’re teasing something new, which looks like the latest drop in this PFP series 👀

BASIIC

ChatGPT took the world by storm this year. This led BASIIC to launch his first collection, Computer Science (Death of), in May to answer a simple question:

“Is it within the realm of capability for modern AI to become a skilled generative artist and creative coder, crafting visually appealing art without the need for human guidance?”

I liked the idea of a gen-art collection made through a series of prompts and think that this clash is just getting started. Excited to see what BASIIC has next.

0xhaiku

An artist who combines art with creative onchain mechanism design.

One of my favorites was a collection called Receipts. The art is made to look like physical receipts and uses a pay-what-you-want model where the amount paid actually changes what the NFT looks like.

Next, you’re able to trade the receipt around, and each transaction makes the receipt longer, showing the history of the NFT’s ownership.

Another collection, called Progressive, is still live. 0xhaiku uses a mechanic they call “super slow NFT art”, where each NFT’s art is slowly revealed bit-by-bit over the course of 24 hours (to mimic the slow loading speed of websites). If you mint prior to completion, you receive a snapshot of the incomplete art.

After completion, and a 24-hour grace period, the price of the art starts decreasing from 0.1 all the way to 0.

0xhaiku has a rare creative touch for onchain experiences, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he ends up capturing the attention of the greater collector community (currently he only has ~1k followers).

Toymakers

This is a self-described “play and research lab” that frequently drops cool mini-experiences onchain.

Their latest project, 2053, was a time capsule where people could lock their NFTs together in a package that won’t unlock until the year 2053. A fun and free way to show my grandkids all the mistakes made in wallets I controlled.

Who knows what’s next, but with only 500 followers it’s worth being on the shortlist of people who find out first.

NOTE: These drops are lightly curated. Our only requirement is that they have recognizable founders. As usual, DYOR. To learn more go here.

SuperNormal Official Comic Series

Art-focused project SuperNormal aims to gain momentum with its recently announced Official Comic mint, which follows the unveiling of a separate upcoming Bitcoin drop just one week ago.

Mint details are still limited, but we know the release will take place on Kometh, a comic publishing platform that has collaborated with other NFT projects like SIPHΞR.

Although no NFT comics have managed to grab hold of the market’s attention for a prolonged period of time, this release might be appealing if you’re a fan of the SuperNormal IP.

Interference by Phaust

After briefly mentioning Tonic’s Season 2 a couple weeks back, the generative art platform has since provided us with more details on their next upcoming drop: Interference by Phaust.

Phaust is a UK-based collective that’s been active since early 2022 on various platforms including Art Blocks, where they dropped a collection that’s quietly attracted some experienced collectors in the space.

Interference draws inspiration from two niche art techniques, Chladni patterns and Risograph printing, and the end result is quite appealing, even reminiscent of 60’s psychedelic art, a style not commonly seen in this space.

I’ll be paying attention, as Tonic feels like one of the best emerging generative art platforms currently.

8NAP Art Mint Pass

I can’t say I find myself longing for more art platforms but Jared Poz, the co-founder and co-host of the popular web3 art podcast Collector’s Corner, thinks differently, as he’s recently unveiled 8NAP Art, his upcoming platform.

Jared positions 8NAP as perhaps the most artist-driven platform yet, providing holistic support to artists beyond the standard mint or drop-specific aid, taking a more active role in the career development of its artists.

Despite it being very early days, they’ve already announced a mint pass that grants holders guaranteed access to at least 6 generative art drops through the end of 2024.
