They're back (and it's 10x worse)

Plus, Christie's & Gucci present Silver, Xie, Mapan

Happy Monday. They need a new word to describe how caffeinated I am in this moment.

Let's get into it before I burst into flames.

In today’s edition:

  • They're back (and it's 10x worse)

  • Updated Mint and Watch Lists

  • Four new drops with potential

More info on Mint/Watch lists HERE.

Did you know?

We have a premium pass that gives you access to a directory of every drop we cover, complete with detailed information on how to get on every whitelist (including those underrated ones that aren’t already full).

And for those curatooors out there, you can get free NFTs just by finding drops that end up on the Mint or Watch list.

Lastly, hang with me and the MoS team in a private discord with weekly voice chats. The vibes are great.

They’re back (and it’s 10x worse)

This is why we can’t have nice things. We all agreed that we’d stop buying braindead NFTs and support true onchain artists instead.

And yet last month 1,000 collectors still woke up, brushed their teeth, and voluntarily minted the gem known as Superman Web3 Movie Edition.

I even remember writing a piece prior to the drop called Who is Buying This Garbage? – and well, I guess a few of you raised your hand.

And now your sins have returned to haunt us.

Because, somewhere at Warner Bros HQ, we made the boomer VP in charge of the blockchain division look very good.

Later his boss probably came into his office all giddy and praised him, saying something like

“Wow Jim, I guess you were right about this crypto thing. What should we do next?”

And Jim probably smirked and replied back, “We’re gonna do it again Jeff, but bigger.”

Thus, last Friday they announced The Flash Web 3 Movie Experience, which quickly became a laughing stock on Twitter.

First, some context

Warner Bros has spent the last year creating mints where they basically bundle a digital movie file with DVD extras, like interactive menus and behind-the-scenes photos, and sell them as NFTs for $30-100 each.

They also release these hilarious trailers that make it seem like you’re totally not just buying DVD extras, but really that’s what’s happening here.

Calling these low-effort is being generous. It’s the kind of soulless corporate idea that should’ve been promptly rejected by every man, woman and child, but instead they’re making just enough money to keep pushing more of them out.

They did it with Lord of the Rings, Superman, and now The Flash.

This time they went viral.

The trailer quickly got millions of views, and journalists around the globe used it as a punching bag for NFTs, which always gets easy clicks.

Ironically it’s now one of the highest-profile mints of the last few months.

There just aren’t many positives here.

A few reasons to skip:

  • Supply is 10x larger than the NFTs sold last drop

  • Horrible terms of service as expected

  • Uses Eluvio instead of L1s people actually use

  • 10% royalties are unnecessarily high

  • If they make $500k this easy they’ll never stop

  • You can just watch this on HBO Max in like a month

But people can spend their money however they want.

All I’m saying is maybe consider more responsible ways of dropping $100 because that’s worth at least 9 ice cream so good’s and/or 15 gang gangs.

NOTE: These drops are lightly curated. Our only requirement is that they have recognizable founders. As usual, DYOR. To learn more go here.

The CUBE

Charli Cohen’s RSTLSS, a digital + physical wearables company, is launching a mysterious CUBE open edition tomorrow, following its recent collaborations with popular web3 artists and giant consumer brands.

This drop is part of the ramp-up toward their biggest release yet, codename Project Pocket Monsters, which despite lacking a Pokémon partnership, features the unlikely drop partner combo of Paris Hilton and Gremplin (not on my bingo card).

While we know little about Pocket Monsters so far, they revealed that tomorrow’s CUBES will ultimately transform into the main pocketmonster contract later on, meaning that this could be considered a presale of sorts in practical terms.

Gumbo by Mathias Isaksen

You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo.

At this point, most people are well aware of geometric generative art. Honestly, most of the drops that come across my desk seem like different assortments of basic triangles, squares, rectangles, etc. that all start to blend together after a while.

But what about saucy geometric art? Enter Gumbo, Norwegian artist Mathias Isaksen’s debut Art Blocks project, a Curated release at that. The collection combines standard shapes into industrial patterns, with an emphasis on appealing colors and textures.

While the release is not reinventing the generative art wheel, it does seem quite polished and could pass many people’s “wall test”, so we’ve….

Added to Watch List

Christie's X Gucci: Future Frequencies

This one’s for the high rollers in the chat.

Two iconic luxury brands join hands as Christie’s and Gucci present Future Frequencies: Explorations in Generative Art and Fashion, a 1-week auction that starts tomorrow, featuring some of the biggest web3 artists.

While some of these auctions involve secondary sales of existing artwork, there are also brand new pieces up for sale, including creations by Claire Silver, William Mapan and Emily Xie.

These will set you back quite some ETH, but that’s the norm for 1/1s by renowned artists.

MNTGE Patchwork

The fashion NFT train keeps rolling with MNTGE, a vintage-focused digital wearables company, launching a Patchwork collection next week featuring collaborations with popular artists like Seneca, Coldie and Grant Yun.

These digital patches can later be redeemed for physicals that are embedded with NFC chips (NFC chips, so hot right now) enabling easy authentication, and a vibey poster.

The physicals could end up being quite rare, seeing as most of these artists rarely collaborate with fashion brands, although we’ll have to see how the rest of the mint details look.
