How have I never seen this artist before

Context

Fellowship is launching Post Photographic Perspectives III: Taming The Machine tomorrow.

This is the last in a trilogy of what has become a genre-defining AI series that began last year.

Here’s what we know:

  • Patron Pass holders mint at 1:00 PM ET

  • alignDRAW holders mint at 1:30 PM ET

  • Public mint begins at 2:00 PM ET

  • Price is 0.05 ETH for early phases, 0.1 ETH for public

  • 10 artists with 100 artworks each: Diego Trujillo, Hrant Khachatryan, Iñigo Bilbao, Ivonna Tau, Jess Mac, Lily Illo, Olga Fedorova, Ossagrosse, Pete Burkeet, Sheldrick

  • You can choose the artist you want to mint, but you receive a randomly selected NFT

Our take

O Dearly Beloved, let it be known that I originally set out to include images from all 10 artists in this collection.

But, time and time again, I found myself coming back to one in particular: David Sheldrick.

I’d never heard of Sheldrick before, but Your Beloved Author has now officially joined the fan club.

He’s what I’d call an AI worldbuilder. Someone who, like niceaunties, can create an alien place from scratch through a small set of visuals that leave you feeling like you perfectly understand its physics and lore.

In this case, Sheldrick’s world is one taken to extremes: absurdly large vending machines, complete absence of personal space, “Where’s Waldo” levels of visual busyness, an abundance of rich food and flowers and trains, etc.

Here are 5 personal favorites from his drop tomorrow:

BASALT GIFs by itsgalo

If you’re a fan of colorful, free-flowing animations, you might find a new home in this collection by Spanish artist Galo Canizares, a.k.a. itsgalo.

Thickly outlined, grainy blends of blue, red and yellow fade in and out of the canvas to form perfect loops.

It’s a style that builds on some of Galo’s past sellouts like RASTER and somewhat reminds me of Refik Anadol’s Winds of Yawanawa.

Details are scant, but it passes my wall test so I’ve tentatively…

Velocity Pass Drop by Kjetil Golid

We previously alluded to this one when talking about the Velocity Pass 2.0 mint earlier this month, but it deserves its own section.

Generative artist Kjetil Golid will be the first to take the stage under this new art program curated by AOI, with art that’s still being kept under wraps with blurred previews.

However, we have noticed that these cryptic sneak peeks look eerily similar to some of the artist’s earlier X posts about a collection titled Change of Basis.

If our assumptions are correct, then that’d mean this new work features Golid’s recognizable geometric style, one that sold out on Verse in February.
