Context

Nahiko, the artist behind popular collections like Entropy, announced new details for their latest onchain drop, Bit Rot.

Here’s what we know:

  • Mint date: November 2nd @ 1 PM ET

  • Mint price: Dutch Auction starting at 1 ETH (0.08 ETH resting price)

  • Supply: 512 NFTs

  • In collaboration with FingerprintsDAO and Highlight

Our take

Your boy has officially Made It.

Nahiko has included one of my NFTs in their latest work of art.

See for yourself:

Well, you’ll have to get a little closer:

Ok a little more, don’t be shy:

…almost there:

There he is.

Mr. Steal Yo Girl.

(this one doesn’t actually match my toad, but never let the facts get in the way of a good bit)

How it works

Bit Rot is an onchain generative collection that presents a series of fiat currency bills with popular market-mover personalities stamped on top, including SBF, Gary Gensler, Larry Fink and Brian Armstrong.

But that’s just the surface layer. Each bill is actually a mosaic of hundreds of real CC0 NFTs that you can view individually by zooming in.

Nahiko draws from popular collections like CrypToadz, MFers, Rektguy, and Moonbirds, among others.

I recommend playing around with it on the official mint page for the full effect (try not to use Firefox)

Now here’s the catch

All those NFTs used in the mosaics are stored in different mediums with varying degrees of permanence.

Some are stored onchain, some are on IPFS, while others are (unfortunately) on private servers.

In other words, some will naturally last longer than others. A fully onchain NFT will exist as long as Ethereum is around, while a private server could shut down at any moment without warning.

This means that, over time, the mosaic will change. You’ll increasingly see more black spots as servers turn off and hyperlinks begin to break down.

Hence the name of the project: Bit Rot. Nahiko wants observers to ponder the importance of decentralized storage as they watch these artworks degrade over time.

It’s a dynamic NFT that lets other creators prove Nahiko’s point through their own laziness. That’s pretty damn cool.

Bottom line

✔️ Highly technical craftsmanship

✔️ Profound (and practical) message

✔️ Novel storytelling approach

Très magnifique. (that’s French for A Real Banger).

NOTE: These drops are lightly curated. Our only requirement is that they have recognizable founders. As usual, DYOR. To learn more go here.

Courtyard.io Community Drop: Happy Holo-ween!

Paging Mr. Gensler - Mr. Gensler we’ve got a drop for you at the front desk.

Courtyard.io’s 2-month-long sellout streak continues as they gear up for their ninth Pokémon card drop, Happy Holo-ween.

This is the first time the platform has a gatekeeping mechanic, requiring at least two existing Pokémon cards to access the drop.

The rules remain the same. Each pack contains one random card that you can trade unrevealed for the first 24 hours. And it’s backed 1:1 by a physical vaulted card, redeemable at any time.

Adam and Hewan by Yatreda

Here’s your reading soundtrack for this one (don’t ask me what the lyrics are saying, dawg).

Active in web3 for a little over two years, Ethiopian family and artist collective Yatreda has amassed a renowned base of engaged collectors through their videography work capturing authentic Ethiopian culture and history.

It’s some of the most unique art in the NFT space, which has caught the eye of curation house Fellowship, who’ll collaborate with Yatreda on Adam and Hewa, a collection of 1/1s tied to the creation myth.

+GRAPH Feral File Exhibition #40

Feral File’s founder and renowned digital artist Casey Reas recruits six established generative artists as he takes over the curation reigns for the platform’s next group exhibition, +GRAPH.

The art showcases the connection between coding and drawing, and it’s a conceptual follow-up to the almost 2-year-old -GRAPH, featuring most of the same artists (except a certain Tyler Hobbs).

You’ll recognize at least some of the artists if you’ve been a generative art appreciatooor over the past year: Licia He, Joanie Lemercier, Aleksandra Jovanić, James Merrill, Iskra Velitchkova and Julien Gachadoat.

The established names along with the low supply (30 sets of art, notably lower than recent Feral File exhibits), make this one appealing to me.

Proscenium by remnynt

An art drop 15 years in the making will soon hit the chain as pseudonymous artist remnynt prepares to release Proscenium (he’s written an essay about it here).

In making this generative collection, the artist created a map of blank 3D structures upon which paint drops bounce and add color. These structures are then flattened to 2D, but the paint bounces retain their original shape and placement.

This makes for some interesting and fun outputs with a great deal of texture, which I could see collectors digging.
