Huge troll drops a $1 NFT

Context

Yesterday, we saw the first-ever mint from one of the biggest institutions in the traditional art world:

So, naturally, it was targeted by one of the biggest trolls from the crypto art world:

This performance art (explained below) comes with a drop called PePE Postcard, an open edition mint priced at 0.00069 ETH (~$1) that ends later today.

Our take

Recently we highlighted this “digital postcard” collection released by the MoMA.

It’s their first mint and kind of a big deal.

I mean think about it – the MoMA actually has their own wallet now.

How long until people start to, idk, send random spam to it?

Apparently, not long.

VVD was the first to find their “internal” wallet address and, of course, promptly started transferring pepe memes to it (as one does).

But he’s also asking some questions with these NFTs

  1. Would a museum burn art that’s sent to them?

  2. What are the tax implications if they keep the art?

  3. Does this mean that pepe is now “in the MoMA”?

  4. What if you change the art on NFTs after they accept them?

Soon others jumped in as well, with some artists sending their own pieces and joking about how it was “an honor” to have their works in the MoMA.

Not everyone thinks it's funny. Some don’t even think it makes sense:

Meanwhile, fans of the work think critics are reading too deeply into this:

Performance art always falls into these camps and often can be outright controversial (see: Matt Kane’s drama from the RarePass drop yesterday).

But the nature of a good troll is that it gets funnier the more their critics get visibly annoyed by it. And VVD is pretty good at being annoying.

VVD’s long history of trolls

There are many moments to choose from.

Take, for example, the time when he minted a bunch of art from anti-NFT furries on Twitter and then offered to split the sales with them, which caused some of them to suddenly be “ok with NFTs”.

Or the time when he launched his own Moonbirds collection on Opensea after Kevin Rose started to aggressively take down anything resembling PROOF’s Moonbirds (VVD’s collection was also taken down, but was brought back when it claimed to actually be inspired by a random bird species instead lol).

Or, more recently, when VVD came in as the guest artist on Opepen and turned the reveal into a bland set of solid color NFTs, including an all-black NFT for the rarest version (thus, poking fun at some of the speculation around art mints in general):

Bottom line

This stuff isn’t for everyone.

But it does bring up emotions and gets people to discuss deeper issues – which you can’t say about 99% of other artworks minted onchain.

And of course, every episode comes with its own mint for those who see the humor in it.

NOTE: These drops are lightly curated. Our only requirement is that they have recognizable founders. As usual, DYOR. To learn more go here.

IYKYK by Kevin Abosch

Disclaimer: I don’t know.

Is it the artist’s magnum opus (like he exclaims), an ephemeral piece of social commentary, performance art or something in between?

Only time will tell for this Kevin Abosch AI art piece, set to end the mint at a random time within the next two days.

Uncomputer

What’s so special about generative art?

Uncomputer, an online exhibition by renowned art DAO Grailers and the Unit London gallery, seeks to answer this question.

The lineup features fifteen familiar artists, including some personal favorites of mine like Emily Xie, Kim Asendorf, Mathcastles, Roope Rainisto, Rudxane and Steve Pikelny (disclosure: I hold works from some).

They haven’t revealed sale details for the exhibited pieces, but given the artist caliber I’ve…

Moncler x adidas Originals: The Explorer

Luxury fashion NFT drops just won’t stop this year. After seeing Dior and Louis Vuitton get in the arena (trying stuff), now it’s Moncler’s turn with The Explorer.

This 3,000-supply free drop is part of a collaboration with Adidas that includes new physicals (which you can check out here), and is set to “evolve within the adidas web3 ecosystem”.

1,929 of these will be claimable via the CONFIRMED mobile app, where you’ll need to connect an ETH wallet.

Being Borges by Ana María Caballero

If the same text is written in two different languages, will AI interpret both versions the same way?

Colombian-American poet Ana María Caballero explores this in her upcoming Verse drop Being Borges, in which AI generates images from text in the Book of Imaginary Beings, co-authored by Jorge Luis Borges.

These images will be minted and sold as NFTs, along with a triptych goodie for collectors.
