How DeGods might change NFTs forever

Context

DeGods Season III is an upcoming event described as the beginning of “phase 2” for the DeGods and y00ts ecosystem.

Yesterday they announced that Season III will begin on August 9.

Our Take

Frank from DeGods thinks NFTs are about to undergo a paradigm shift.

And in the next couple of weeks, he says his team will be the first to prove it.

That’s the scale of how he’s been promoting the upcoming DeGods Season III launch.

And when Marc Colcer asked Frank on his podcast how he prepares for the possibility that none of this lives up to the hype, his first response was “I do think we’re going to blow people’s minds.”

Do you buy it?

On one hand, anyone who has been in NFTs, or crypto in general, is used to seeing overconfident founders leaning into hype trains and promising the world.

On the other hand, the DeGods team has shown over the last 18 months that they might be one of the only groups who actually “gets” degens and collectible culture.

You can see this by the numbers (DeGods is now top 5 by market cap – although this could easily change depending on S3 execution).

And also from some of the lasting cultural memes that they’ve started (y00tslist application meta, shooeys, buying a sports team).

I do think the timing feels right. People are incredibly jaded by most of the “2021” style roadmap NFTs and, more than ever, seem open to something new (anything!).

But what exactly should you expect from Season III and why will it be so mind-blowing?

I’m sure we’ll hear more from Frank in the coming days, but we already have some clues.

Here’s what we know

Multi-day experience. Frank thinks attention is an NFT’s best friend. So it makes sense that anything they work on will be stretched as long as possible (similar to y00tslist). Expect this to play out over days, and possibly even weeks.

Art Refresh. A lot of the DeGods art is mid. You know it, I know it, and apparently, the team knows it. They’re hyping up the art refresh and think this’ll make it easier for new people to buy in.

Brand partnerships. Two months ago Frank made a post seeking brands to collab with them on some upcoming experiences. We’ll likely hear more about how this vision will play out, and maybe even the first example.

(Probably) no airdrops. A year ago everyone wanted an airdrop, now everyone fears the dilution. Frank made it clear that the art refresh is not dilutive, plus in general, airdrops would be the opposite of any “new paradigm” he’s preaching.

Points and Merch. We know that Points will play a big role in everything DeGods going forward, but that’s about all we know. My guess is that it’ll be the key to future merch drops, but hopefully there’s some more 4D underwater chess getting revealed soon.

Shift towards micro-drops. Frank says the goal is to move towards a model with more frequent experiences and drops. This makes it sound closer to what “seasons” look like in games like Fortnite, where battle passes come with 2-3 months worth of themed mini-events.

I am in a state of cautious excitement.

But if Frank really does change the game I’ll personally send him a batch of my nonna’s homemade Pasticciotto just for giving me something to talk about in an otherwise sleepy summer market.

We’ll keep you updated.

NOTE: These drops are lightly curated. Our only requirement is that they have recognizable founders. As usual, DYOR. To learn more go here.

E30D #4: Terraforms

Another month, another Glitch Gallery poster collectible.

This time, the gallery’s notable curators have chosen to highlight Terraforms, a 10k onchain generative art collection launched in late 2021 that some of you might already know (and love).

It’s one of your Dear Writer’s favorites (I’m a holder), and though its conceptual nature may be hard to grasp, the glitch team has done it justice in their write-up.

Even though the gallery’s previous poster NFTs have not fully sold out (this might have been the intended design, as each of them has 1,000 supply), they still seem to be a hit among secondary market collectors.

Threads by Professor Jun

Professor Jun is a pseudonymous web3 art critic and commentator active since late 2021 whose work, particularly the It’s Monday Night series, has attracted some of the biggest artists and collectors in the space to the point of them purchasing 1/1 art reviews for 0.45 ETH a pop.

Now, nearly 2 years into his journey, the professor is releasing his first-ever art collection: Threads.

The generative work features sleek, colorful lines that traverse and cross paths on a 3D grid atop a white canvas. It is easy to grasp visually but tells a deeper story in its inspirations, which the artist is confident in.

The Cameras by Oxdgb

0xdgb is an anonymous digital artist who skyrocketed in popularity near the end of 2022 with a minimalist style that resonates with a broad web3 audience, often featuring security cameras (a motif initially popularized by another anonymous artist, ripcache).

Now, following various sales on platforms like SuperRare and Foundation, he’s presenting his next edition mint with The Cameras.

We don’t know supply or price, but the artist hints that the collection is similar to a 1/1/X model (think XCOPY’s Grifters) but with a twist. We’ll have to wait and see.

money_clicc drop by Guido Di Salle

I initially mentioned money_clicc last month, partly because the collective’s small size (only 100 members) curiously contrasts with the level of notoriety of some of the artists they work with.

After selling out of their diewiththemostlikes edition last July, the collective is back at it again, this time delving into photography with an August release by Guido Di Salle, exclusive for money_clicc familia NFT holders.

This photographer’s risqué creations have found many homes in the wallets of some of the most notorious collectors, so he’s no stranger to the space.
