Fellowship’s new AI drop – with a twist

Context

Fellowship, a digital art gallery, announced a new series of daily curated AI art drops.

How it works, according to their website:

  • The series launches in September

  • Each week they’ll post a calendar of daily 24-hour auctions from curated AI Artists

  • Each day will have between one and ten 1-of-1 artworks

  • All auctions begin at 1 PM ET, starting at a reserve of 0.01 ETH

  • It starts with AI video but will expand to other categories.

Our take

Anyone studying the ancient tomes of Mint or Skip lore will know that I am a fan of AI art.

There’s just something great about witnessing a historical transition like this one, where artists are going from simply using tools to make art, to actually collaborating with non-human agents for the first time.

Specifically, I’ve been captivated by Post Photography, which we first started covering back in February, and more recently, the rabbit hole of AI Video.

And Good News – that’s exactly what we’re getting here.

But…can there ever be too much of a good thing?

One of the criticisms AI Art gets, from a collector standpoint, is the risk of oversupply.

It won’t be long until there are far more people making AI art than every other genre combined (if we’re not already there). Midjourney alone has almost 17 million registered users, and it hasn’t even launched a mobile/web app yet.

These artists can also operate at faster speeds than other disciplines, with new collections getting spun up with (relative) ease.

All this can be scary for collectors, who are still trying to discover their taste for AI art. Remember we’re still in the very early innings here - no one fully knows what they’re doing (and that’s half the fun).

This makes curation more important than ever before

As usual, 99% of these works are instantly forgettable. But in this case, it just so happens that the quantity of forgettable art is orders of magnitude greater than usual.

Luckily, we do think Fellowship has become the top Post Photography/Video curator in the space.

But they’re now embracing a volume game we haven’t seen before, with mints going from “every few months” to “every single day”.

On one hand…

Awesome. More new artists getting highlighted, and more chances to buy works from up-and-comers at relatively affordable levels.

Plus, the idea that these mints turn into an onchain timeline of how AI art progresses over the course of months and years is pretty cool.

On the other hand…

At some point, managing collector fatigue will become a challenge, especially if this really is just a continuous series without any breaks.

I will say, however, that I’m liking the first batch highlighted on their site!

Added to Watchlist

NOTE: These drops are lightly curated. Our only requirement is that they have recognizable founders. As usual, DYOR. To learn more go here.

FLUX

One of this year’s trends has been artists experimenting with unique sales models, as seen in drops like Opepen and Doppelgänger.

FLUX (a collaboration between FVCKRENDER, LVCIDIA and Fair.xyz) could be seen as one of these experiments, where a single NFT will highlight twelve works from different artists over the course of the coming year.

We lack mint details, but I expect this to be an open edition.

New-life, to Still-life by cydrv

cydr, a Brazilian artist known for his eccentric digital creations, will make his Verse debut in mid-September with a 10-piece collection titled New-life, to Still-life.

As the name suggests, the work showcases the artist’s take on the still life genre, with a post-internet art vibe featuring prominent digital artifacts.

One for the internet culture connoisseur.

Keepers

Keepers is a customizable avatar drop from Open Innovation, a company founded by former a16z advisor Alex Price.

It leans heavily on metaverse use, as seen in Open Innovation’s recent short film, which was made in collaboration with media company Miramax (also working with Keepers).

I’m considering this as “Fashion” given the prominence of the avatar fashion accessories, but it could be in several different categories.
