They got paid $1 million to share memes

It’s a link to a “free” NFT. Maybe click it?

Every time someone mints that NFT, a few things happen:

~ I get paid $0.17

~ The original creator gets paid too

~ And an intern gets closer to being promoted

You too can be part of the fun.

Welcome to Based MGMT, a new NFT experiment on Base chain from crypto artist and thinker 0xlght that’s trying to take over the world through some innovative new mint mechanics.

How you get paid

Based MGMT is taking advantage of Zora’s latest fee-sharing features.

You see, every time someone mints a “free” NFT using the Zora protocol, there’s a 0.000777 ETH fee that goes directly to Zora (hence why we put quotes around “free”).

This comes out to $1.20, hardly noticeable to the average degen.

And now, Zora is sharing that fee with creators, minters and referrers.

Enter Based MGMT

Their plan is to launch a network of meme makers (“interns”) that create NFTs promoting Based MGMT., a fictional 80s-style megacorp.

If you apply with a meme and get selected, you’ll get a shout-out on Twitter and your meme gets listed on their mint page.

Here’s the split every time someone mints your meme:

  1. $0.69 goes to the based MGMT treasury

  2. $0.17 goes to the referrer (someone like me maybe)

  3. $0.17 goes to the meme creator

  4. $0.17 goes to Zora

Plus, if you get 1,000 NFT mints under your belt you’ll get promoted from “intern” to “based manager”, which gives you a manager NFT and a treasury vote.

It’s like Nouns in a way, where you have a bunch of NFT holders managing a growing treasury, except in this case, it’s a meritocracy instead of pay-to-play.

Now I know what you’re thinking

"Just $0.17? Did I accidentally sub to the Mint or Skip: Ballers on a Budget edition?”

Yes, of course, $0.17 from a single mint is chump change. But the other side of the equation is obviously how many units there are.

In other words, how many people are actually out there minting Zora NFTs?

As it turns out – quite a few.

So far, there have been over 500,000 “free” Zora mints, and they’ve paid out 827 ETH in protocol fees across all mints to date.

That’s over $1.2 million, with the majority going to mint/creator referrals.

All that during a bear market where people are walking around mumbling gm to each other as their bodies slowly deteriorate into piles of sand.

Imagine when the vibes come back.

Bottom line

Based MGMT is a lighthearted experiment with some cool underlying features.

Whether this specific idea works or not, it gives us a clue to where the space is heading.

We’ve spoken about the shift toward the onchain curator economy plenty of times, and this is just the latest step getting us there.

NOTE: These drops are lightly curated. Our only requirement is that they have recognizable founders. As usual, DYOR. To learn more go here.

Twos by Emily Edelman

After selling out her Cosmico and Monospatial collections earlier this year, generative artist Emily Edelman follows up with Twos, a 64-supply Art Blocks Presents drop.

The name says it all, every piece in the collection showcases the number “2” in different ways.

One for the arithmomaniacs (that’s a word, trust me).

HELLIONZ

HOWLERZ, a CC0 PFP launched in February 2022 by previous CryptoPunks Brand Lead Noah Davis, will be celebrating spooky szn with HELLIONZ, an open edition PFP drop.

It features a pay-what-you-want model (with a min. price of 0.013 ETH) and a play-to-mint experience (details unknown).

Here’s to hoping this mint is better executed than the original one.

Typical Friends Mystery Drop

It’s been a quiet couple of months for Typical Friends since the Garbage Bags mint (still evolving into their final PFP form) with little news regarding the Tony Babel drop.

That silence was broken yesterday with this Mystery Drop. We don’t know if it’s an artist collaboration or a piece by Magnusson himself, but either way, you’ll have to own an Ooze Friend to have a chance to mint.

Untitled Artwrld drop by John F. Simon Jr.

John F. Simon Jr., a historied New York-based artist who’s been working in generative art longer than it’s been a thing in NFTs, will be popping Artwrld’s cherry in the genre with a yet-to-be-named collection.

The artist has dabbled in non-fungibles before, most notably in a 2021 collaboration with FingerprintsDAO, lending more web3-specific social credence for what is to come.

I’m intrigued.
