Finding the next big meme
Friends of mine, upon hearing the unconfirmed rumors that We Might Actually Be Back This Time, have started to message me about NFTs again.
The reason is unsurprising: they simply want to know which meme collection will “pump next”, and they want to know as soon as possible.
And, of course, I tell them that I know the answer.
But so do they.
All they have to do is look deep inside their hearts, and ask themselves…which NFT would piss them off the most if it did pump?
What would have them absolutely enraged to the point where they might swear off NFTs altogether and become lifelong Right Click Savers.
That’s it – that’s the one!
(I’m being facetious, but not really, this is often true)
The follow-up question is always: fine, but how does one predict their pain and buy ahead of time?
Well here’s one method. An ancient strategy that, at the very least, leads to many fun outcomes.
I heard this method best described by venture capitalist Imran Khan on the Good Game podcast. It goes like this:
The harder I laugh, the more I buy
Very simple.
The entire strategy is literally in the name: you laugh, you buy.
This plays off of something similar from the art world, where the most basic strategy is “if you like the art, buy the art”.
In the case of memes (coins and NFTs), the emotional reaction is often just…laughter.
And if something makes you laugh, chances are it’ll make someone else laugh. The more demented, the better.
Now, if and when prices start going up on one of these things – that’s when the anger kicks in.
It kills people to think that something This Dumb can be making others rich, while their Sophisticated Strategy gets them nowhere. They try to stop it, they try to shame the buyers, all of which only make it stronger.
Unfortunately for them, there have been many such cases:
Dogecoin
Cryptodickbutts
Milady
HarryPotterObamaSonic
To name a few (there are countless others).
The downside
But here’s the catch. Internet comedy ages poorly.
Memes tend to have a very short lifecycle: they go from viral sensation to max cringe in an instant.
Here’s an entire library of dead memes - jokes that once made your ancestors giggle but are now cringy fossils of a forgotten age. Keep this in mind as you shop for HAHAs.
Also, avoid memes that actually try to build anything. It makes it real, people start doing calculations, and nothing is more cringe than running a Discounted Cash Flow analysis on a meme.
Bottom line
This is mostly a shitpost about a silly strategy that often fails but is peak fun on the rare occasions when it works. It’s as NFA as NFA can get.
NOTE: These drops are lightly curated. Our only requirement is that they have recognizable founders. As usual, DYOR. To learn more go here.
Digital Bath by artplusbrad
Two weeks after the sellout of Gewgaw, generative artist artplusbrad (a prolific Art Blocks Presents creator) is running it back with Digital Bath.
Another animated collection, this one’s more on the chaotic glitch side of things compared to Gewgaw’s smoother visuals, depicting the flow of electricity in water.
One for those without epileptic family members.
Big Boss Burn by Defaced
Following an impressive 30 ETH sale in his SuperRare debut in September, digital artist Defaced gears up for Big Boss Burn.
This gated drop requires burning two Gotta Get Gurt avatars (an April 2023 collection) of the same type to mint a Big Boss.
Defaced has a long track record in NFTs (since late 2020), and renowned collectors buy his work. Maybe we’ll even get to see another one of his sketches for this drop, so I’ve…

The Survival Game by Degen Alfie
Degen Alfie is a digital artist who garnered a large following in 2022 thanks to his vibrant pieces depicting the main characters of crypto, particularly the not-so-savory ones.
Now, as we look forward to (possibly, maybe, NFA) brighter onchain days, he’s closing this chapter in his art journey with The Survival Game.
It’s a gamified art release that starts with an open edition, encouraging interaction between participants along the way. The trailer looks promising, and I could see people being into the narrative.
Lumina by DistCollective
DistCollective, a prolific artist duo with a long track record on platforms like fxhash, make their Art Blocks debut next month with Lumina, a 350-supply Presents release.
The art depicts cosmic phenomena with colorful, distorted swirls of light glitching on a black canvas, letting go of realist portrayals in favor of ethereal ambiance. Might pass your wall test, so check out Sansa for output examples.
One for Starboys.
