Disney is launching an NFT (my reaction)

Context

Disney announced a new NFT collectible experience called Pinnacle

Here’s what we know:

  • It’s a partnership with Dapper Labs

  • Launching on Flow later this year

  • Using IP from Star Wars, Pixar, and animated films

  • And the NFTs themselves will be “digital pins”

Our take

Today we’re talking about your favorite media mega corporation.

Known for such great hits as…

Olaf’s Frozen Adventure

Home on the Range

And The Eternals

(amongst others I’m told)

Now Disney is off to their next adventure: NFTs.

I’d like to walk you through my reactions as I read this news yesterday.

Reaction #1: Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice…

I’ve grown cynical around vague corporate NFT announcements.

Years of low-effort Game of Thrones, Porsche, LOTR, Nickelodeon, and DC Comics mints have frozen my little heart.

Plus let us never forget how, not too long ago, Mickey ruthlessly exiled the entire Disney metaverse division as soon as the market took a tumble.

Is this announcement just for show? Something they’ll only throw a few interns at? Hard to tell.

Reaction #2: Then again, Disney’s CEO is secretly based

Bob Iger likes NFTs. I’m convinced he’s shitposting on crypto Twitter with an alt.

Here he is waxing poetic back in 2022:

"We forget, in our generation, that things don’t have to be physical… They can be digital, and they have meaning to people. And as long as that meaning can be essentially substantiated in a blockchain, I think you’re going to see an explosion of things being created, traded, collected in NFTs."

Then you have him investing in a metaverse company (Genies) whose sole raison d'etre is apparently to help celebs launch NFT mints.

And finally, check how much he’s cheesing while physically minting his very own NFT, a cryptovenetian by Bright Moments.

That’s a degen.

Reaction #3: Pins???

I’ll admit, I’ve lived all these years without knowing about The Great Disney Pins Market.

Apparently, it’s a thing. Good thread here showing how people go apeshit over these things, often spending thousands of dollars on rare pins when they visit Disney World.

In fact, the 2023 Pin Trading Event was SOLD OUT with people wanting to “Gather with fellow pin enthusiasts for an exciting event filled with special pin trading opportunities and experiences.”

So it actually makes sense that Disney is taking one of its most naturally collectible assets and using that as a pilot for NFTs. This is for the Disney hardcore, not for crypto Twitter thot leaders.

Bottom line

Disney’s relationship with NFTs is the “we’re so back, it’s so over, we’re so back” meme.

For now, We’re Back, although I’m still skeptical about how much effort they’ll throw at this.

But directionally it’s great news and could act as a stepping stone for the tokenization of their other beloved IP.

NOTE: These drops are lightly curated. Our only requirement is that they have recognizable founders. As usual, DYOR. To learn more go here.

After Ginsberg by theVERSEverse

We’ve seen digital art, generative art, music, and even furniture on the chain. But what about poetry, AI poetry, at that?

That’s what we’ll get with this Unit London exhibition by theVERSEverse, a poetry-focused collective and gallery partly co-founded by artists Ana María Caballero and Sasha Stiles.

The multi-phase project begins with 18 poem editions crafted by the collective’s custom AI model. Trained on the work of 20th-century writer Allen Ginsberg (in partnership with his estate), the AI reinterprets his work in search of hidden truths.

To mint or not to mint.

Treeangles by nix.eth

Brand new artist and former Horizen Labs team member, nix, debuts with his 300-supply Treeangles – a fully onchain generative collection in the works since 2021.

The art showcases trees in low-polygon nature scenes with aesthetically pleasing results.

One for nature lovers as each mint contributes to the planting of fifteen real trees in the minter’s name. Can’t wait to enjoy a cool summer breeze under the shade of pumpindabutt69.eth’s tree.

ATLAS by Eric de Giuli

GrailersDAO is back with new art following their September sellout of Fold by rudxane.

Details are scant, but we know ATLAS will be a dynamic collection (and possibly generative onchain). It’s a genre that De Giuli has explored heavily in the past, most notably with Calian, an Art Blocks Curated release from March with a notable collector base.

As with previous Grailers drops, GrailersDAO NFT holders will get first dibs on this one.

Added to Top 25

Teddies on Vacation by numo

Pixel artist numo gained quite a large following back in the good old 2021 days thanks to his work on Blitmap and his own CryptoTeddies collection

Now he’s running back and reimagining the latter with the 3,666-supply Teddies on Vacation, a fully onchain PFP collection that sees his recognizable teddy bear characters take a leisurely hotel stroll.

Pixel art and crypto people, name a better duo.
