9 NFT drops I’m watching in March 👀
Planet Mojo War Banners
March 4th – @weareplanetmojo
Polygon-based gaming ecosystem Planet Mojo and its flagship P2E autobattler Mojo Melee take their first-ever detour to the ETH mainnet with this upcoming free mint.
Dropping on Magic Eden’s new marketplace (recently discussed here), these banners act like VIP passes with holder benefits including early access to future games in the ecosystem, in-game perks, and even land (2021 PTSD flashbacks aside, details on this last one are currently scant).
You can check recent Mojo Melee gameplay here to see if it’s something you’re interested in, but even if you’re not, with more games on the way, a low price of free, and a recent Amazon Prime partnership for the developer, it’s probably worth keeping an eye on.
OverTrip Founder’s Pass
March 5th – @PlayOverTrip
The genesis mint for OverTrip, an upcoming battle royale game, is the second of four gaming mints gracing this list.
This is another collection of free passes that will grant benefits like special in-game content, early access to features, and perks related to an upcoming $TRIP token.
Zero gameplay has been revealed so far, but it’s being developed by GGXYZ, a studio founded in 2021 that recently launched its second game, Dark Frontiers, so there’s proof of past game™️.
GGXYZ is linked to the Gamestarter platform, another launch partner for this release, and backed by VC firm Shima Capital, a previous investor in notable projects like Pudgy Penguins (if that should be the type of thing to get you going).
Barbarians by Jacek Markusiewicz
March 6 – @jMarkusiewicz
Do yourself a favor, O Gentle Reader. Head to Verse’s drop page, open the art in full view, and really bathe in that incredible 4k detail. This email compression doesn’t do it justice.
Barbarians is the latest release in the Verse Solos series, which has sold out every drop so far, and it’s their first to be fully onchain.
This one comes with 444 large fictional landscapes, shot from above in a way that almost gives me “military plane looking down through a grayscale thermal scanner”.
It’s also a collector-curated drop, meaning that holders will be able to choose what their artwork looks like by shuffling through the generative algorithm.
Metabolts
March 7th – @delabsOfficial
An upcoming mobile anime RPG being developed by Delabs Games, web3 arm of Korean studio 4:33 led by ex-Nexon employees, which will soon drop a genesis PFP collection.
In the endless sea of web3 anime PFPs, the art for these doesn’t particularly stand out, but I do find them aesthetically pleasing. The holder benefits safely tick the boxes on your stale mint bingo card: airdrops, in-game perks, early access, etc.
However, the early gameplay footage shows a level of detail that I don’t see often, plus a unique style that might differentiate it from the bajillion other anime mobile games out there.
One for the Honkai: Star Rail-type of weeb.
SOURCE [On NFTs] by Robert Alice
March 12 – @robertalice_21
It’s amusing that despite NFTs feeling so modern and indie, one of the best crypto art drops last year (Themes and Variations by Vera Molnar) came from Sotheby’s, one of the oldest institutions on the planet.
This month we’re visited by yet another 200-year-old auction house, Christie’s, which plans to release their own first in-house gen art collection called SOURCE [On NFTs] by Robert Alice.
These artworks were originally commissioned by TASCHEN for their upcoming book On NFTs, and are made up entirely of text derived from crypto whitepapers, digital art manifestos, 7th century Chinese philosophy, and other sources deemed relevant to the current NFT movement.
The 400 NFTs will be sold via Dutch auction, but no details on resting price yet.
Visions by San FranTokyo
March 29 – @san_frantokyo
Weebs unite, this is your moment.
San FranTokyo is at the epicenter of Anime NFTs. Their parent company Weebox is making action figures with onchain digital twins, partnering with IP brands like Ghost in the Shell, and even joined Animoca Brands on something called the Anime Foundation.
Now they’re taking part in an age-old tradition: the anime PFP.
In this case, it’s 8,000 front-facing characters with prices ranging from free (if you hold a Weebox NFT) to 0.12 for public, although ETH is up like 30% since they first announced this so that could change.
This is less about buying pure art and more about joining a community layer on top of a business that’s pioneering the physical-digital toy space (along with Pudgy Penguins).
Dew Origin Pass
March TBD – @dew_hq
Dew, an aggregator for Polygon NFTs that launched in early 2023, will soon launch its own genesis NFT collection, The Origin Pass.
It offers preferential access to the upcoming Dew Studio, an incubator and launchpad for curated partner collections, the first one of these being SA World.
Their marketing frequently mentions keywords perfect for the most excitable of market participants – airdrops, WL spots, and even the elusive… IP (gasps).
While little information can be found online about the founders of Dew, the platform raised $10 million from big market players like Polygon and Circle, lending it credibility.
What can I say, ‘tis the season of free passes.
Keys and (ch)art by Batzdu
March TBD – @batzdu
Batzdu loves Pepe, and any friend of Pepe is a friend of mine.
We did an entire profile on Batzdu a few weeks ago. I recommend checking it out to understand what he’s doing at the intersection of fine art and memes, and why he’s exploded in popularity over the last 24 months.
This month he’s aiming to kick off his generative arc with Keys and (ch)art.
Keys is a collection for those holding Batzdu’s My Keyboard NFTs. We still don’t have much in the way of sneak peeks.
(ch)art is, well, a set of market charts, ranging from simplistic ones to whatever this is.
Both are dropping in the same week sometime in March (although there have been delays already).
PixelPals
March TBD – @pixelpalsai
Pixelmon is back with a new hypercasual mobile game, PixelPals, which follows their first gaming release late last year with the flappy-esque Kevin the Adventurer.
An early access build just launched today for a select group of people, with a global launch coming soon. Here’s a quick summary:
It’s a PWA (i.e. same type of mobile app as friend.tech) developed on the Mantle L2
You mint pets (pets = pals) and habitats for free, and care for these in a Tamagotchi-like way with food, game activities, and ✨decorations✨
Interactions are tallied up and rewarded P2E-style with Pixelmon’s $MON token
There’s a PVP card game called “Duels” coming later on.
Millennials and trying to make Tamagotchis come back – name a better duo.
