The 100-year NFT experiment

Context

Crypto artist 0xfff announced an upcoming collection called Honest Work.

  • Supply: Edition of 100 NFTs, plus a 1/1 that I’ll be auctioning

  • Price: 0.1 ETH for the edition, auction for the 1/1

  • Mint date: Monday, April 22

  • Blockchain: Ethereum

A couple of months ago I did something that I’d never done before in my life.

I turned on the camera, went LIVE, and auctioned off an NFT.

Not only was this my first public livestream ever, but it was also the first-ever NFT live auction on X and YouTube.

It was fun. There were a lot of bids, I got to slam a gavel, etc.

Many of my Dearest Readers were there, but I understand that some of you missed it, and you’ve likely lived in a shroud of darkness ever since.

But I have some good news: I’m about to launch my second-ever livestream auction…on Monday.

First, some notes on the main collection, and then we’ll get into the specific 1/1 that I’m auctioning.

How Honest Work works

Life in NFTs can often be reduced to a series of checklists.

Mint this, stake that, claim this, always GM, sell before it's too late.

Honest Work is an art collection that puts a mirror up to this (tedious) existence that we’ve all voluntarily chosen to participate in.

The mechanics are simple:

  1. You have an NFT with a task on it, such as transferring it to a wallet with a specific word in it (like “BEEF”) or transferring it on a specific date

  2. Each task brings about a new task in a never-ending todo list

  3. As tasks are completed, the list on your NFT visibly grows longer

  4. This all happens automatically onchain, lasting as long as Ethereum does

It’s conceptual art that focuses on the medium (the blockchain) and our experience using it.

It’s also a choose-your-own-adventure.

You can play this endless game and join a list-measuring contest with your peers. Or you can opt out of the system entirely and forever hold a provable relic of your rebellion.

Interestingly enough, in some cases I could see the “virgin” tokens, AKA the ones that have zero tasks completed, retaining more value than the long checklists since new owners might want a clean slate to play with.

The 1/1

The 1/1 that I’m auctioning is the same as every other piece in the collection, except for one thing.

The first task is…to do nothing for a century.

lol

This is something I love about blockchain art – the ability to play with longer timeframes.

A century from now, this NFT will suddenly unlock a second task assuming the owner doesn’t transfer it (or forgets to wrap it while transferring it).

This will happen whether you like it or not, whether it’s valued at zero or $1M USD, whether the government is monitoring our every move, whether we even have a government or we're just living on Mars as enlightened beings at that point.

As long as we have the internet and working cryptography, there’s a good chance that Ethereum will still be running, and this NFT you see above will blossom like a nerdy mathematical butterfly.

You and I won’t see this play out (well, I might - TBD). But our grandkids are gonna love it.

Hope to see you at the livestream 🫡

NOTE: These drops are lightly curated. Our only requirement is that they have recognizable founders. As usual, DYOR. To learn more go here.

Crypto Angels by Trevor Jones

Veteran artist Trevor Jones is planning a big drop for this summer with two collections and even a video game.

Here’s what we know so far:

  1. Archangels, dropping in June, is a digital + physical collection of 21 bronze-cast, Bitcoin-defending angels with accompanying 3D avatar NFTs on ETH

  2. An Ordinals PFP collection dropping in July with a much bigger supply (7,777), pixel art style, and likely more accessible price point

Also, lore lovers will have something to sink their teeth into as this all stems from a 2021 Nifty Gateway Open Edition.

For those who genuflect at the altar of the corn.

Offline Oracles

Satvik Sethi, previous NFT lead at Mastercard, will soon release the genesis NFT collection for his Offline Protocol, which aims to create an ecosystem for censorship-resistant apps through offline networks.

The Oracle NFTs will serve as VIP passes to the protocol, giving early access to products and user rewards for using it and its apps.

There are still details missing, including upcoming additions to their whitepaper, which I’d like to see before pressing the mint button.

Might need to rebrand my whole “terminally online curator” bit if this becomes a trend.
